Every home has that drawer full of old chargers — cables that no longer fit, adapters that charge too slowly, power banks forgotten with a dead battery. Before you buy yet another charger "just in case," it's worth knowing exactly what you're looking for.

Step 1: Identify what device you charge most often

Needs vary a lot depending on the device:

  • Phone – priority: speed and portability
  • Tablet – priority: enough power (at least 20W) so it doesn't charge slower than it discharges during use
  • Laptop – priority: sufficient wattage (see our article on Power Delivery)
  • Multiple devices at once – priority: a multi-port charger or a charging station

Step 2: Wireless or cable?

Wireless (Qi) charging is convenient — you set the phone on a pad and you're done, no plugging and unplugging a cable dozens of times a day. It's great for a desk or nightstand. The downside: it's generally slower than cable charging at the same rated power, and the phone needs to stay still on the pad.

Cable charging remains the fastest and most efficient option, especially for a quick full charge before heading out.

Practical tip: use wireless for top-up charging throughout the day, and cable for fast, full charges.

Step 3: Power bank – how much capacity you actually need

Capacity is measured in mAh, but the big number on the box doesn't translate 1:1 into full charges, due to conversion losses. Quick guide:

  • 5,000–10,000 mAh – one full phone charge, ideal for a city break or a day out
  • 10,000–20,000 mAh – two to three full charges, suitable for a few days of travel
  • 20,000+ mAh – for tablets, light laptops, or heavy long-term use

Also check the power bank's output wattage — a big battery with low output power will still charge a laptop slowly.

Step 4: Signs of a quality charger

  • Visible safety certifications on the product
  • Overheating and overvoltage protection
  • Durable cable materials (doesn't fray after the first few bends)
  • Clearly stated Power Delivery or Quick Charge compatibility, where applicable

Quick buying checklist

  1. Which device(s) do you charge most often?
  2. Do you need mobility (power bank) or a fixed station?
  3. How many watts does your device need for optimal charging?
  4. Do you want one universal charger or one dedicated per device?
